As we celebrate Yoga Week in Australia and International Yoga Day (June 22nd), it's the perfect opportunity to pause, stretch, and reconnect with our bodies. I have included a short yoga class on YouTube that focuses on opening the hips and hamstrings—areas commonly tight from long hours sitting, driving, or engaging in sports.
Yoga’s Growing Popularity in Australia
Yoga has become one of the most popular wellness activities in the country. According to the Sport Australia AusPlay survey, over 1.17 million Australians aged 15+ participated in yoga in 2022, making it more popular than golf, netball, and soccer for women (Sport Australia, 2022).
Participation is highest among women aged 35–54, many of whom are drawn to yoga not only for physical wellbeing but for the mental and emotional balance it brings.
Yoga is More Than Just Poses
It’s easy to think of yoga as simply making fancy shapes with your body—but the heart of yoga is much deeper. Traditional yoga teaches essential tools for life, such as breathwork (pranayama), mindfulness, single-pointed focus (dharana), and meditation (dhyana).
These practices help cultivate self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and resilience—skills that support us in navigating daily stress, improving relationships, and staying centred through life’s challenges. Yoga is truly a practice for the body, mind, and spirit.
Why People Keep Coming Back to the Mat
Most people begin yoga for the physical benefits—such as improved flexibility, strength, and injury prevention—but the reasons they stay go far deeper. Research from the University of Connecticut found that:
78% of long-term yoga practitioners cite stress relief as a key benefit
61% report spiritual growth and inner peace
67% say yoga helps with mental focus and emotional wellbeing (UConn Today, 2015)
Yoga offers more than movement—it's a practise of presence, breath, and personal growth.
